Landmark Law passes in Nebraska

Good news! On Tuesday, the Nebraska Legislature passed the "Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act." The new law prohibits abortions in Nebraska after the unborn child can feel pain, which happens at twenty weeks. NLRC and Nebraska Right to Life lobbyists successfully worked closely with Nebraska Speaker Mike Flood to make the bill's language as strong as possible. The legislation is the first of its kind. It is being described by observers as nothing short of "landmark." No state has ever passed a similar pain law.

The law will save lives. It will protect the twenty-week and older unborn child in the womb from the pain and horror of abortion. It will protect mothers from the grief that so often accompanies the decision to abort. The law is expected to be reviewed by the Supreme Court. If so, it could redefine a state's legitimate interest in protecting the child in the womb.

This bill is a real victory for grassroots pro-life Americans and the unborn. Thank you!-

Time Travelers Wife and Pro-life

Americans United for Life put out a really great article on the 'Time Travelers Wife' and the Pro-life message. I saw the movie and enjoyed it.... I really enjoyed the pro-life message that was able to be connected with the movie. Check them both out...

If you are not sure what to write or don't have the time to figure it all out.... (my husband is working nights again so I have ALL the time in the world!) please use all or part of my letter. I just copied and pasted it and sent it to all four people listed in the previous email.

Re: Budget cuts

Dear Bishop Frederick F. Campbell Vicar General,

I am writing in regard to the recent information that the Diocese of Columbus has plans to remove the Respect Life Department at the end of 2009. I am saddened and confused by this decision. Although I am mindful of the need for budget cuts due to recent economic problems I do not understand how our Catholic diocese can remove such an important department.

I know that the lives of countless unborn children and their mothers are dependent upon the efforts of the Respect Life Department. As a lay person I look to the Diocese of Columbus to guide my efforts to promote life in this culture of death. I am fearful that without a department specifically working toward ending abortion the effects could be very damaging. Furthermore I know that affirming human life is the cornerstone of the social agenda of Catholicism. I am proud to be a voice for those who cannot speak. By removing this department it would seem that the Respect Life movement is no longer as important. And of course we know that the Pro-Life movement is extremely important for all those unborn children and those affected by the horror of abortion.

I will personally commit to praying that the financial situation may allow the Respect Life Department to remain active. Our society needs the firm commitment of our Catholic Diocese to be the beacon of light leading the laity to respect life in all forms. Thank you for all your continued efforts in our diocese and May God continue to bless you.

Sincerely,

Tara De Lucia
